Backgroom Gang - Performing July 25th

The Backroom Gang was formed in 1970 at The Abbey, a pizza parlor on 14th Street in here Traverse City. It is now home of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. Dennis Huntley, who played trombone, put an ad in the paper looking for musicians to form a band, and Dave Campbell showed up with his banjo, Paul Price with his cornet, Gary Routsong with his tuba and Linda Huntley was on piano. The only thing missing was a percussionist. The story goes that when Denny inquired if anyone in the crowd played washboard, Flip Sinkule, who was in the audience with his date, said that he did. Flip went to his car, brought in his washboard and climbed up on stage. He spent the rest of the evening playing with the band; his date went home alone.

Why is it called The Backroom Gang? The Abbery pizza parlor had two rooms. The front room was the "family friendly room" where no adult beverages were served. The Backroom was where one could also get alcoholic beverages. It does not take a genius to figure out where the band wanted to play. Hence, the Backroom Gang.

The present members, with their approximate ages and when they joined the band are..

Hal Fisher - Tuba (76), joined the band in 1975; former band master at Suttons Bay HS.

Don Frost - Drums and Washboard (79), started subbing in 1979 (although he was part of the band in Ann Arbor that became the BRG in 1966-69) regular member in 1985; retired OB-GYN.

Fred Szpzepanski - Piano and Lead Vocalist (67), joined the band in 2005; Music director for St. Francis Catholic Church in TC.

Bill Bramer - Clarinet (79), joined around 2005; worked at NSA and his job was so secret he forgot what it was.

Doug Hansen - Banjo and Vocals (65), joined around 2016; professional musician and classical guitar player.

Mike Hunter - Trombone (67), joined in 2022; well known trombonist and arranger and educator.

Kevin Smith - Trumpet (65), joined in 2023; music educator.

Jan Fisher (wife of Hal) and Kerry Secrist - Singers, joined in 1978.

The Gordon Lightfoot Tribute - Performing August 1st

Mike Fornes - Appearing as Gordon Lightfoot, live in concert.

Retired from a radio and television play-by-play career that spanned 26 years and more than 1,500 broadcasts in the National Hockey League and professional baseball, Mike's musical interests now blend the woods, the water and the wildlife with the North Country music you'll hear in his shows.

His portrayal of Gordon Lightfoot is simply an honest effort to entertain with an accurate representation of a Lightfoot concert. Mike plays the role of "Gord" in first person, yet avoids saying "I" or "me" in his storytelling of the songs and the circumstances of how they were written. His tireless research and personal interaction with Lightfoot have lead to accurate mannerisms, speaking patterns, clothing, and of course identical guitars used the by the Canadian icon on stage.

Rarely does he break character, usually only to introduce the band or give a personal message before the end of the show.

He has performed for a decade at the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum's annual bell-tolling ceremony for the lost souls of the Edmund Fitzgerald at Whitefish Point, MI. His interaction with surviving family members of the lost crewmen, and Lightfoot himself generate many first-hand accounts of the tragedy and of how the iconic song was written.

If you have read Mike's newspaper work, heard him on the radio, seen him on TV or read any of the the five books he has written about Michigan's Mackinac Bridge, Grand Hotel or the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Mackinaw, his love for the Straits of Mackinac area is clear.

On stage, he demonstrates his love of a genre of timeless music that captured millions during the 1960's, 1970's and 1980's. His catalogue of Gord's music includes 76 songs that he chooses from in concert.

Mike tours annually and plays more than 60 shows in five states and Canada.

K. Jones and the Benzie Playboys - Performing August 15th

K. Jones and the Benzie Playboys are a six piece band playing blends of traditional, old school zydeco and cajun music, while infusing rock, reggae and blues. The band grew from the woods and swamps of northwestern lower Michigan with roots of founding members Kirk Jones and Mark Stoltz starting in Louisiana. Their early exposure inspired a lifelong respect for Louisiana culture and music which they share with their fans across the country.

Jones, lead singer, plays traditional button accordions and fiddle alongside Stoltz who scrubs the washboard and plays triangle. Jonah Powell, fiddle player and guitarist, contributes plenty of sweet leads to the mix while the rhythm and second lead guitarist, Sean Dye, locks in the sound with heart and timing. Doug Albright, on the 5 string bass, is melodic and snappy, aligning his funk and groove with drummer Jamey Barnard who drives the freight train with a soulful source.
