Memory loss can be scary for those who are experiencing it and for the people who love them. There is a wide range of reasons for memory loss as well as the degree to which the memory loss affects a person’s ability to safely function at home and in the community. The good news is that therapy can help treat memory loss in a variety of ways!
Speech therapists can perform comprehensive testing to assess the degree of memory loss as well as other impaired areas of thinking. After identifying these areas, they educate you and guide you through exercises to help improve your memory. Also, they teach you strategies to help cope with impaired memory in order to stay as independent as possible.
Occupational therapists educate and train clients to use strategies to minimize the impact of memory loss on their activities of daily living. This may include the use of routines, breaking down tasks, and recommendations for environmental safety modifications just to name a few.
Physical therapists design comprehensive programs including strength, aerobic, and balance training taking into account any medical comorbidities in order to maximize a client’s physical function. Studies have shown that regular exercise can improve blood and oxygen flow to the brain and minimize the effects of memory loss.
If you or your loved one is experiencing memory loss, first make an appointment with your doctor. Ask your doctor about a prescription for speech, occupational, and/or physical therapy. The therapists at the Grand Traverse Pavilions Wellness Center are ready to help you fight back against memory loss. Please call 231-932-3172 for questions and to make an appointment.
